Jewelry Affaire Again!

Hooray! We're in Jewelry Affaire in the October issue. There is only one pair of earrings shown but the article is about different kinds of Victorian buttons. Did you know they had "perfume buttons?" Young ladies at the turn of the century wanted to smell good for their young gentlemen suitors. What better way than to dab some of your favorite perfume on your buttons?! Clever young women they were! Wearing pieces of history is such a thrill. Live in Gypsy Style! xo

Romance Abounds

Romantic Inspiration"Out of Africa" is one of the movies I most admire. Karen Blixen was her own woman at a time before it was in fashion. She lived her life her own way. Two of the wonderful poems she quoted in that movie are included here for your enjoyment. Her parting toast when leaving Africa for the last time was "For many a rose-lilt maiden and many a lightfoot lad."

.
"I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong hills..." ~Isak Dinesen Sea Cottage

The real Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen, how beautiful she was!

“With Rue My Heart is Laden”
With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had,
For many a rose-lipt maiden
And many a lightfoot lad.
By brooks too broad for leaping
The lightfoot boys are laid,
The rose-lipt girls are sleeping
In fields where roses fade.
By A. E. Housman

"When I Was One-and-Twenty"
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
“Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.”
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
“The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
’Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.”
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.

                                                          sweet land of liberty
Happy Fourth of July from The Gilded Gypsies!

Sunday, June 28, 2015

We're still around, just disorganized and overwhelmed. Isn't everyone?

I am visiting our sadly ignored blogspot as I do see a bit of traffic.  Don't hate us. Life has a way of happening, doesn't it?

The Gilded Gypsies have been uber busy.  Several new publications for your viewing pleasure.  Anne was a featured artist in Where Women Create, May-July with a fabulous article featuring her cunning little studio in Sonoma, California. 10 fabulous pages and still available on newstands! Check it out!

I had a feature article in Jewelry Affaire magazine, Spring 2015 issue.  4 pages (It's not 10, but I was right proud just the same) on a collection of Tintype jewelry I created using some of my favorite things, gem tintypes, cut steel and buckle buttons.  Upcoming article in the Fall issue with Carved Shell button jewelry.

We were also part of the Art Is You show in Petaluma, California in April.  We were featured vendors and had the opportunity to host the welcoming hospitality event for a wonderful group of students, vendors and teachers that included Michael and Andrea DeMeng and Susan Lenart Kazmer. We met some great friends and got to see the work of talented others including Nellie Wortman and Lynn Suprock. I am giving a peak at our wonderful booth which we've decided was spectacular but too much work for two old broads like us.

I'll do better, I swear it.    Marie~
